This financial cooperation project supports the endeavors of the state of Santa Catarina regarding protection and regeneration of the sparse remains of Atlantic coastal forests, on the national and state levels. Emphasis is placed on some 8 protected areas of differing legal and biological units as well as sustainable land use in the surroundings of the core regions. Of especial importance are investments for the protection of protected areas – esp. regarding management plans, demarcation, infrastructure and equipment – as well as institutional prerequisites for effective protection. This includes the active involvement of the municipalities and the population which is directly concerned.

Main Services Provided:

  • Elaboration of management plans as the basis for further measures;
  • Investments in the protection of the designated protected areas. Supervision of the infrastructure for management (rehabilitation and construction of regional offices of the Environmental Police and FATMA, visitor centres, administrative centres, support to the acquisition of equipment and manpower for installation of a communication system, design and route of trails, creating an environmental interpretation and developing architectural and engineering projects of the sign posts to be implemented);
  • Quality assurance for infrastructure development / rehabilitation projects;
  • Controlling and elaboration of an integrated environmental management system, including monitoring and evaluation as well as fire fighting and preventive measures;
  • Assistance and guidance on correct procedures for procurement, monitoring and validation of contracts with contractors;
  • Promotion of the cooperation between the implementing authorities, the civilian population and the population of the surroundings;
  • Activities in surroundings of protected areas for the sustainable use of resources;
  • New designation of some few, strategically important protected areas;
  • Promotion of cooperation with other financial and technical cooperation projects.
