IP Wave

Country: Mozambique

Client: GIZ

Counterpart Organization: National Institute of Disaster Management (Instituto Nacional de Gestão de Calamidades - INGC), National Meteorology Institute (Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia - INAM)

Project Duration: 04/2011 - 01/2013

Since 2002, the German Technical Cooperation provides support to the INGC in Mozambique regarding the strengthening of national disaster risk management systems. In this context, a new trilateral cooperation project between Brazil, Mozambique and Germany has been developed. The project is supported by the programme PRO-GRC II which is implemented by the consortium IP Consult-Ambero Consulting.

This project aims at establishing an early warning system as part of an improved disaster risk management. The Brazilian partners – Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET), Agência Nacional de Águas (ANA), Diretoria de Hidrografia e Navegação DHN, and Brazilian universities – are renowned institutions in weather forecasting and disaster risk management. Therefore, the Brazilian contribution to the already established cooperation between Mozambique and Germany creates substantial added value.

Main Services Provided:

  • Technical and institutional consulting services to INAM and INGC and other national institutions
  • Optimisation of meteorological and hydrological monitoring and connection to an early warning system for extreme weather events by introducing climate analysers and level meters for weather forecasting and disaster risk management
  • Strengthening of decentralised capacities in vulnerable districts (district administrations, local committees) focusing on the provinces Sofala and Inhambane
