The Biomass Energy (BE) is the most important source of energy in Nepal. While the country still possesses large BE resources, the level of its use is unsustainable. This situation has not yet been adequately addressed in the field of Energy Strategy formulation. In close cooperation with the local stakeholders, the Consortium develops a Biomass Energy Strategy (BEST) with a differentiated understanding of the diverse biomass energy situations in Nepal. We bring up integrated solutions which contribute to the development of balanced and sustainable supply-demand systems for BE. The main objectives of the assignment are:

  • To provide an overview on the baseline situation of the BE sector with respect to its diversity;
  • To analyze major trends and their implications in the BE sector of Nepal as well as institutional challenges in the management of the BE sector;
  • To estimate the potential of savings and conservation of biomass resources through the adoption of more efficient technologies;
  • To identify and propose strategic measures to improve the access to sustainable BE sources and to improve the adoption and usage of efficient BE technologies (production and use);
  • To build consensus and promote wider awareness among stakeholders on the role of BE in the country;
  • To incorporate cross cutting issues like governance, poverty reduction, gender and social inclusion, HIV/AIDS, health and climate change into the BEST and suggest intervention options.
